709 Roller Derby

Newfoundland and Labrador's first roller derby league, located in St. John's.

The 709 Roller Derby league was established in 2009. Our mission is to empower women and gender non-conforming people and provide them with a healthy outlet for competitiveness through the sport of flat track roller derby.

We strive to be a not-for-profit organization run by the skaters for the skaters and to provide aid to our community through fundraising, community service, and other initiatives.

Today, our league has 2 regular home teams, and practices run year-round with a competitive bouting season from June to the end of August.

What We Believe

709 Roller Derby is dedicated to creating a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment for everyone, regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, color, national origin, age, disability (physical or mental), sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, parental status, pregnancy status, marital status, political affiliation, military and veteran status, as well as mental health status, socioeconomic status or background, neuro(a)typicality, or physical appearance.

709 Roller Derby will not tolerate sexism, racism, transphobia or homophobia. We will work continuously to combat the effects of discrimination in our leagues and in our communities.

Our Gender Statement

All transgender and gender non-conforming people are welcome to play with 709 Roller Derby, provided that said person feels comfortable participating in a league that follows the rules of the “Women’s Flat Track Derby Association”. Further, all those wanting to participate or compete within 709 Roller Derby are entitled to do so without disclosure of gender identity, serum hormone levels, or any other surgical or medical history. Such information is private and confidential. Any conduct which fosters a hostile environment for any participant on the basis of gender identity will not be tolerated.

We welcome officials and volunteers of all gender identities to participate within our league and league activities.
